Employee BenefitsWhile pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing and medication reviews are specific to an individual, these services can also be beneficial to employers. GenePharmer, LLC is looking to partner with forward thinking employers who know the importance of optimizing employee health. Employers who make the services of GenePharmer, LLC available to their employees can see a reduction in healthcare spending as well as a reduction in lost time at work and an increase in employee productivity.  Consider the following:

  • In a randomized clinical trial where pharmacogenetic testing was used to guide medication therapy for patients with depression or anxiety, there was a reduction of 1.21 disability days per patient per month (Source).
  • The Kentucky Teacher’s Retirement System (TRS), Coriell Life Sciences and the Know Your RX Coalition partnered together in 2017 to bring PGx to eligible members of the TRS. They were able to show that over the first 32 months of bringing this voluntary program to their Medicare Advantage members, a combination of PGx testing and comprehensive medication management reduced direct healthcare spending by $7000 per patient.  While this study was looking at retirees, there are plenty of non-retired individuals on large numbers of medication (polypharmacy) who could potentially see a similar reduction in healthcare spending (Source).  You can also check out this PGx for Pharmacist Podcast for more information on the Kentucky program (Podcast).
